Jake's Eagle Scout project was completed in the summer of 2011. With the help of scouts from
Troop 4, his classmates, the community, friends and family; Jake successfully sound proofed
The Bishop's School choir and symphony rooms.
The motivation behind the Eagle Scout Project came while Jake was practicing with the Bishop's School Symphony. The adjacent room was the choir room and their classes would be practicing at the same time. The music from both rooms would constantly bother the other class. There were several reasons for the transmission of the sound, first the door swing for the Choir Room was backwards, causing a fire hazard by trapping students in the room in the event of an emergency. This required the door to remain open at all times. Second, the doors had large gaps underneath and around the door jams, so that even if both doors were closed the sound transmitted through the gaps. Third, the walls were made with one sheet of particle board so the sound transmitted directly through them.
Jake embarked on a lofty project of correcting all three issues in a building that was over 100 years old and designated Historical. He began by securing the necessary material to be donated from two very generous community centered companies,
Bycor Construction and
Serious Materials. Then the construction began with changing the door swing, adding sound boots to the door jam and threshold, and then adding a layer of QuietRock soundproofing drywall to the rooms and hallway. A follow-up coat of paint and new baseboards, left the area appearing untouched but quiet as a rock!
The Choir and Symphony at the Bishop's School was very satisfied. When the new school year began both groups could finally practice in peace.
